The leaves are falling and there is a chill in the air, which means Halloween is close at hand. If you plan to take the children in your care out for trick-or-treat be sure to follow these safety tips to ensure everyone has a spooky good time.
Stay in groups
Younger children should always be accompanied by an adult when out trick-or-treating. If older children and teenagers go out they should stay in groups and inform an adult about the route they plan to take. Parents should consider their child’s maturity level and their ability to make safe and sensible decisions when determining whether an older child or teenager is responsible enough to go out in a group.
Use reflective tape
Children and parents should place reflective tape on clothing and bags to help drivers see them. Stay on the sidewalk and don’t allow children to run or play close to the street. Make sure children look both ways before crossing the street and use crosswalks when possible.
Keep a flashlight with you to help navigate areas that are not well lit.
Buy flame resistant costumes
Keep children away from open flame sources like jack-o-lanterns and candles. When purchasing a costume check the tags to ensure they are flame resistant.
Ensure costumes fit properly
Flowing princess and ghost costumes can be fun, but make sure they do not restrict mobility or become a tripping hazard. Parents or caregivers should test out the costume fit prior to going out for trick-or-treat night.
Makeup is a safe alternative to masks that can obstruct visibility. Make sure to remove makeup before bedtime to help prevent skin and eye irritation.
Wait before eating candy
Candy should always be inspected by an adult before eating. Throw away any unwrapped, damaged, or homemade items.
Be considerate of others
Offer candy that is nut free to avoid potential allergic reactions.
Keep an eye out for children carrying a blue bucket, that indicates they are on the autism spectrum and may be nonverbal or sensitive to lights and sounds.
A great Autumn treat that is fun to make with the kids in your care are caramel apples.
- 6 apples (Granny Smith or Fuji)
- 1 (14 ounce) package individually wrapped caramels
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 6 wooden popsicle sticks
- Parchment paper
- Non-Stick cooking spray
- Wash apples and dry. Chill clean apples for 1 hour.
- Microwave caramels and milk in large glass or microwave safe bowl on High for 2 to 2 ½ minutes or until caramels are completely melted.
- Insert a wooden stick into the stem of each apple. Cover a cookie sheet or large plate with parchment paper and spray with non-stick cooking spray.
- Dip apples one at a time into melted caramel, turning to make sure the apple is completely covered. Hold apple over bowl and let excess caramel drip off.
- Placed dipped apples on parchment paper and refrigerate for 15 minutes to set caramel before serving.
Roll dipped apples in sprinkles or crushed cookies for variety.
