The Ohio Children’s Trust Fund has a very simple goal “to prevent child abuse and neglect through investing in strong communities, healthy families and safe children.”
To ensure that, we focus on parents, caregivers, and professionals who serve families. When the people who surround children have the support and resources they need, then children get the nurturing environments they deserve.
What we value above all else are strong Ohio families — of all types.
What We Do
We are Ohio’s sole, dedicated public funding source for child abuse and neglect prevention, responsible for:
- Providing grants to other agencies and nonprofits that provide programs in their communities. We focus on programs based on evidence to show their effectiveness.
- Providing resources and education to parents and caregivers to help them manage stress, find support and services, and build stronger foundations for their families.
- Providing training and education to professionals who provide services to families.
- Annual awareness campaigns each April to educate the public about child abuse and neglect prevention.
Additionally, we are affiliated with other national organizations, such as Prevent Child Abuse America and the National Alliance of Children’s Trust and Prevention Funds to further our prevention mission in Ohio.
All of these activities add up to support our goal of providing children in Ohio with the best chance at safe and healthy childhoods.
The Trust Fund was started in 1984 when Ohio lawmakers recognized the need for an agency that could use public money to fund child abuse and neglect prevention. Ohio Revised Code sections 3109.13 through 3109.179 governs the operations of the agency, sets the powers of our board, defines our regions, and defines other requirements of the Trust Fund.
Since its creation, the Trust Fund has provided funding to support primary and secondary child abuse and neglect prevention programs for Ohio families, as well as to educate professionals in child abuse and neglect prevention best practices. This remains a vital part of how we approach this important issue in the state.
In 2016, we embarked on a new five-year Strategic Plan that expanded our vision to also include providing an empathetic net of support for parents and caregivers because we recognize that strong families and healthy relationships are the foundation of prevention. We’re excited to make increasing family support another vital part of our approach as we move forward.
