Child Abuse and Neglect Affects Families From All Walks of Life
It impacts communities across the country. And in the 23 counties of Eastern and Southeast Ohio, certain factors such as unmet basic needs and limited child care options put children at greater risk. That’s why the Southeast & Eastern Ohio Regional Prevention Councils developed Lead by Example, an initiative designed to support families, build stronger communities and connect people to the information they need to help protect children from abuse and neglect.
A National Issue
Neglect is the most frequent form of maltreatment. Of the children who experience maltreatment, three-quarters were neglected.
The youngest children are the most vulnerable. Nationally, more than one-quarter of victims are younger than 3 years old.
At least 1 in 7 children have experienced child abuse and/or neglect in the past year. This is likely an understatement.
Most child abuse and neglect happens within the family. The majority of people that cause or allow the maltreatment of children are caregivers.
