As parents, it is our duty to teach our children to become resilient to life’s setbacks. A child who is resilient to small life challenges, will be much better prepared to face major life situations should they ever arise.
Stress is part of life. Even from young age, anyone is susceptible to experience a variety of setbacks. Sometimes it can be something very minor that can be easily handled, but sometimes it can be major life problems that are not handled as easy. Either way, it is important for any person, no matter their age, to learn the skills necessary to handle these types of situations.
As a parent, it is especially important to learn how to handle stress in a healthy manner. Our children are always watching, and it is our responsibility as a parent to set an example of how to handle stress in a healthy way.
Resilience is the ability to face stress without letting it get the best out of you. As a parent, resilience means being able to control how we respond to stressors while still providing the loving and safe environment that our children need to thrive.
Resilience is a skill that can be learned. No matter what kind of situation you are facing, being able to manage your stress is a vital way to ensure you are giving your children the skills to become healthy adults.
Stressors can be burdensome at times but being able to identify the problem and respond by working towards resilience will ensure you will get out of it stronger while also showing your children how to become resilient themselves. Resilient parents raise resilient children!
Here are some ways to manage your stress, build your resilience and be a good role model to your child:
Take care of yourself
The most important thing when facing stress is to take care of yourself. Maintaining a healthy routine, eating balanced meals and exercising regularly are great ways of taking care of your mind and body. As mothers and caregivers, we often tend to put everyone else’s needs first, and forget about our own. Establishing a routine of self-care can bring great results and help you to be resilient when stressful situations arise. It is not always easy to find time and strength when you also need to take care of others, but small changes on your daily routine can make a big difference in the long run. Starting with a few stretches in the morning, a walk with your kids at the end of the day, ensuring you are getting proper nutrition, and taking a few deep breaths, are ways to calm your mind and body so you can focus on how to tackle your setbacks.
Shift your perspective
Looking at the problem with a different perspective can make a huge difference. Certain stressful situations cannot be changed; however, you can minimize the impact it has on your life by changing the way you think about the problem. Trying to look for something positive in the situation, or not perceiving it as a huge disaster can often make the situation easier to handle. Giving space to negative thoughts will only make things harder to deal with. Reframing your thoughts, and not letting negativity get in the way will help you take control of your problems and become more resilient.
Find your village
Life is hard enough, no one should be doing it on their own. Parenting can feel isolating at times and having a network that you can rely on during a difficult season, will give you an extra support to face any situation. Sometimes reaching out for help can be out of your comfort zone but being able to overcome those barriers will make a great difference to your well-being. Inviting a friend for coffee, talking to a family member or joining a support group will greatly improve the way you face life challenges.
Don’t give up
Most importantly, don’t give up! Sometimes when you are facing a challenging situation, it can be difficult not to lose hope. No matter what the situation is, just know that this too shall pass. Do not lose hope. No matter what the challenge it is, hang on to that tiny bit of faith inside of you. It will only make you stronger, and soon you’ll see the light at the end of the tunnel!
We can’t prevent difficult situations from happening in our life. Being able to manage small setbacks in a healthy way will also ensure you won’t be knocked down by major life struggles.
Learning to be resilient will make you a better parent. Children feel most loved and secure when their parents are happy. They can also sense when their parents are struggling and can be directly affected by it. Showing them how you manage your stress, will indirectly teach them how to manage theirs.
