Healthy Pregnancy Equals Healthy Children

A pregnancy can be an exciting time in your life, but it also can be scary, especially if you’re having your first child. Your mind may be filled with questions about how your pregnancy will go and whether your baby will be healthy.

The good news is that there are a lot of simple things you can do to give your baby the best chance at a healthy birth — and that also means having the best chance at a healthy childhood. Many studies have shown that getting the right care during pregnancy can influence how your baby develops, and that having a healthy pregnancy will give your baby a good head start in life.

Prenatal Care

When you see your doctor regularly, he or she can detect common health issues that affect pregnant women and developing babies. Many times, there may be steps that prevent issues from becoming serious problems, or keep your baby from being born too early.

Stress Reduction

Over the past few decades, research has emerged that links stress during pregnancy with a number of outcomes that can affect a baby’s development and health. Those include:

  • Low birth weight
  • Premature delivery
  • Increased risk of miscarriage

Being mindful of stress and having good coping mechanisms in place can help you to have a healthier pregnancy and healthier baby. Talk to your OB/GYN about effective ways to relax and reduce stress during your pregnancy.

Nutrition During Pregnancy

Eating right during your pregnancy is just as important as getting regular checkups from your doctor. Here are just a couple of ways that the nutrients you get during pregnancy can impact you and your baby.

  • Folic acid helps prevent birth defects
  • Calcium and vitamin D help your baby’s bones and teeth develop
  • Extra iron helps you stay healthy while your baby grows
